GWINFO: Integrated Ground Water Data and Project Archival System

Steve Wilson, Jon Foote and Allen Wehrmann, Illinois State Water Survey

The Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) houses water well records for the State of Illinois, as well as a large groundwater quality database principally populated by data from the ISWS Public Service Laboratory (PSL) and the Illinois EPA’s ambient groundwater sampling program. Additional data from groundwater research projects, including water levels, water use information, and aquifer properties, are also held in this database.  These groundwater-related data are used to support applied groundwater research activities in Illinois and to provide basic information to the general public. These data have been integrated into a comprehensive database for desktop access and GIS mapping, utilizing a custom interface with an SQL data storage system. The program, called GWINFO, allows users to integrate data storage, retrieval, and reporting, along with electronic document archival capabilities to provide a complete storage system for research projects and public service data. These information are then made available for others to use.  As GWINFO is developed further, modules are planned to provide more outside access to these data using ArcIMS as well as downloading of water level information and hydrographs via the web.

Steve Wilson, Illinois State Water Survey Steve Wilson is a groundwater hydrologist at the ISWS. He has a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois. Mr. Wilson has been involved in numerous groundwater assessment projects dealing with both groundwater quantity and quality issues. He recently completed an evaluation of the statewide arsenic occurrence in groundwater and is working with ISWS staff to assist in the development of GWINFO, a program to integrate groundwater data into a SQL-based system for archival, entry, and retrieval of groundwater data.

Jon Foote, Illinois State Water Survey Jonathan Foote is a Programmer/Analyst at the Illinois State Water Survey. His education and experience is in engineering and software design. His expertise is with client/server database software development. Mr. Foote has served as project leader on several large information systems projects. He is presently working with the Center for Groundwater Science at the Illinois State Water Survey where he has developed and is currently managing various integrated information systems

Allen Wehrmann, Illinois State Water Survey H. Allen Wehrmann is a Senior Hydrologist and Director of the Center for Groundwater Science at the ISWS with over 25 years of experience in conducting groundwater resource and contamination investigations. Mr. Wehrmann is a registered Professional Engineer in Illinois, and is a certified Professional Groundwater Hydrologist by the American Institute of Hydrology. Throughout his career, Mr. Wehrmann has conducted and analyzed numerous aquifer tests across Illinois through which he became intimately familiar with the Survey’s Aquifer Hydraulic Properties Database. Mr. Wehrmann's research interests include the use of new technologies for hydrogeologic site characterization and data-sharing.
