Springs Ecosystems Inventory, Classification, and Monitoring
In this short course, students will be introduced to the theory and techniques of inventorying spring ecosystems as well as how to classify springs with this inventory information. A half-day will be in the classroom to introduce the theory and a half-day spent in the field to demonstrate materials and techniques. Students will learn both Level I and Level II surveying. In a Level I Inventory, students will learn how to locate, photograph, and provide a reconnaissance level description of the spring type, site condition, presence of unusual plants and animals, and human impacts on springs ecosystems. In a Level II Inventory, students will learn how to locate, photograph, describe, sample, and map riparian and aquatic plant and invertebrate communities to determine diversity, conduct geologic/geomorphic and hydrogeochemical analyses, and conduct a wildlife survey in order to make recommendations for restoration and/or long-term monitoring.
