Ground Water Management in New Mexico: A Challenge of Increasing Demand, Limited Supply, and Statewide Implementation
New Mexico ground water management continues to be a challenge due to limited information, unsustainable ground water pumping, inadequate funding, and increasing water demand —both within New Mexico and beyond its borders. At the end of 2003, New Mexico released its new state water plan, a strategic water resources management tool with a primary objective to protect current water users while allowing continued development of the resource to meet the needs of the future. The plan lays the foundation and provides guidance to establish the physical and legal tools to protect the state’s water supplies and maintain administrative authority over the state’s water resources. This workshop covers many of the challenging and changing aspects of ground water management, including ground water information fundamental to creating and implementing management plans, current status of the state water plan implementation process, and what managers need know about to meet future requirements.
