Harnessing Water Resources in the Next Century for Bangladesh Agriculture

  ABSTRACT
Water is an essential component of sustainable agriculture. Rainfed agriculture in Bangladesh is risky, while irrigation is expensive but profitable. Quality irrigation water is a scarce resource during the dry season. Efficient irrigation technologies should be used/ developed to make best use of this resource. Rice cultivation requires a huge quantity of water. Therefore, the number of rice crops in a pattern should be reduced and substituted with other economically important crops.  If more environment friendly irrigation techniques and crop types are given a higher priority, water use could be dramatically reduced, resulting in more sustainable development.
