Development of a Sub-Regional Equilibrium Water Budget Using Well Log Data

Kurt O. Thomsen, Ph.D., CGWP., PG1, Connie L. Pokorny, M.S.2 and Janet L. Agnoletti2, (1)KOT Environmental Consulting Inc., (2)Barrington Area Council of Governments

During the last few years the Barrington Area Council of Governments (BACOG) has been studying the hydrogeology of the shallow aquifer system in a 590 square mile study area to support groundwater resource planning.  The shallow aquifer system is composed of 200 to 300 feet of glacial drift overburden and the upper portion of the underlying limestone/dolomite.  The study area is located about 40 miles northwest of Chicago.  BACOG has developed a three dimensional stratigraphic model of the study area from readily available stratigraphic data mostly water-well logs.  Model information was used to estimate the magnitude of elements composing an equilibrium water budget of the study area.  Elements included in the water budget were, recharge, discharge, through-flow, and vertical exchange between the drift and the bedrock.  Methods used to develop the water budget and results are discussed.
