Water Wars in Maine: Politics, Taxes and Control

James Wilfong, H2O for Me

Jim Wilfong, Director of H2O for Me, a former Maine legislator, Clinton Administration trade official and businessman will discuss the far reaching public policy issues concerning Maine groundwater usage. He is leading a citizen's effort to bring Maine's groundwater law into the 21st Century.
Wilfong will speak about the difficulties of enacting legislation to establish the public trust for groundwater, protect the resource and the surrounding environment and provide financial equity for the citizens given the new market value of drinking water. Focusing on the various issues, Wilfong will share his experiences while conducting the H2O for Me citizens'
initiative and the strategy they pursued to pass the new water law that Maine's governor has called " landmark groundwater legislation". The stakes remain high and the Maine Water Wars are far from finished.
