Ground Water Geochemistry
This is an introductory aqueous geochemistry course for anyone responsible for ground water sampling protocols, interpretation of water quality data, management of ground water characterization and remediation projects, or use of water quality results in litigated disputes. The course will cover sampling design, importance of linking hydrogeology and geochemistry, general water chemistry parameters that influence all projects, geochemical controls on mineral/contaminant solubility, ion-ion interactions when dissimilar ground waters are mixed, behavior and limits of adsorption, application of ion pairs and isotopes to answering questions of origin, unique considerations when dealing with organic and radioactive contaminants. The course will not focus on specific remediation strategies, but all subjects covered are germane to understanding and designing remediation systems.
