Green Groundwater Remediation:  An EPA Perspective
Martin Zeleznik/ EPA Region 9, San Francisco
As defined on an EPA webpage, "Green Remediation is the practice of considering environmental impacts of remediation activities at every stage of the remedial process in order to maximize the net environmental benefit of a cleanup."  This concept will be discussed in relation to the remediation of ground water, along with a description of what the Southwest regional office of EPA (in San Francisco), as well as EPA headquarters and others, have been doing in this emerging field.  Many activities have already occurred and some are still being developed.   A few site examples will be presented as summarized case studies, as well as project management tools (guidance documents, online resources, calculators, financial incentives) and how a site can make use of the concepts today in the existing regulatory structure.
