Salinity Assessment and Management In Ground Water Basins I

Addressing accumulated salts in ground water basins is a growing challenge and involves assessment of natural and anthropogenic salinity sources, water management practices, residuals management, and, more recently, brackish source water supplies. When ground water basins are subject to conjunctive use practices involving extracting ground water during seasonal or extended dry periods with subsequent basin recharge when native or imported water is available, salt management can be a critical issue in maintaining a long-term sustainable supply of potable water. Brine residuals management is another factor to consider. Advances in desalination technologies and reduction in costs are leading to an increasing trend in the use of brackish ground water to supplement supplies. This session presents case studies of current practices, plans for future management alternatives, and current and future regulatory and policy trends in addressing salt management in ground water basins.
