Denver Basin

Sunday, April 11, 2010: 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Ground Water Summit registrants may enroll in this field trip held in conjunction with the event for an additional fee. Participants will visit formation outcrops corresponding to the Denver Basin’s aquifer system and learn about its geologic history. The Denver Basin is a peripheral foreland basin located on the eastern flank of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. This basin formed in the latest Cretaceous and Paleogene as the thrust-bounded Front Range was uplifted in response to compressive tectonics. This synorogenic basin filled with coarse grained fluvial strata and more distal floodplain deposits as the rising mountains shed material to the east. Field trip stops at various municipal water supply wells afford the opportunity to discuss the history of Denver Basin groundwater development, its management, and regulatory environment.
