Dr. Alley, who served as chief of the Office of Groundwater for the U.S. Geological Survey, has published more than 80 scientific publications including the text Regional Ground-Water Quality. He has served on national and international committees for numerous organizations such as UNESCO, National Research Council, NGWA, and IAH, and is the recipient of various awards including the NGWA John Hem Award, the USGS Shoemaker Award for Lifetime Achievement in Communication, the Department of Interior Distinguished Service Award, the Meritorious Presidential Rank Award, and the Groundwater Foundation E. Benjamin Nelson Government Service Award.
