This session will illustrate through examples in the field and laboratory the behavior of water movement through the vadose zone and some of the counter-intuitive aspects pertaining to it. We will briefly cover basic concepts of unsaturated flow to explain the unexpected behavior. We also
Show how principles governing flow in the vadose zone differ from concepts governing flow in aquifers. Information presented is highly relevant to developing conceptual and numerical models of flow and transport in the vadose zone, including applications to groundwater recharge and contaminant migration.
