Sivamathy Sivachandiran, University of Jaffna

The Jaffna Penisula is the Northern part of the Sri Lanka. In this area people only used underground well water for drinking and other purposes. People are minimally concerned about the quality of drinking water and the underground water getting polluted. A study was carried out to measure the quality of the water. In addition to the measurement of the water quality, the data related to possible sources of pollutants to the underground water was also collected.

The study suggested that 80 % of the well water in the pilot area was not suitable for drinking purposes. There were several correlations between the location of the well and the quality of well water. Therefore most of the well water must be treated and the people in this area have to be educated on maintaining the quality of the underground water.
