Ground Water Policy and Regional Management in Florida: A Changing World - Topical Session, 1 CEP
Florida presents some unique challenges for sustainable ground water resources management, including a seemingly large supply of water based on annual precipitation and abundant surface water bodies, yet increasing demands and technical challenges such as arsenic and salt water intrusion are straining supply. Due to hydrology dominated by subtropical warm, wet summers, flat overland surface flow, a strong connection between surface water and ground water, and decades of political, legal, and institutional controls, Florida continues to be a hotbed for ground water management challenges. Management of water resources falls under five water management districts and water supply is provided by a variety of regional water authorities and local public supply systems. This session will focus on the political, legal, institutional, technical, and economical issues of ground water resources management in Florida: hydrogeologic setting, the political landscape of ground water, and case studies of management in practice
