Horizontal Bioventing Wells Installed for Reuse of Midwestern Downtown Brownfield - Workshop, 1 CEP
A 70-year-old former bulk petroleum storage facility in downtown Columbus, Indiana is being cleaned up for re-use as a training facility for the City of Columbus, Indiana. A risk integrated system of closure-based site investigation identified total petroleum hydrocarbons in the unsaturated zone in two co-mingled plumes. Cost analysis indicated that regulatory cleanup requirements would be met most efficiently with vertical soil vapor extraction wells and horizontal bioventing wells. Buried obstructions were encountered during horizontal drilling, including large reinforced concrete, automobile parts, and chain-link fence. Excavation was used during the horizontal well installation procedure, partly to accommodate space restrictions at the site. Operation data, including pressure gradients and oxygen levels along the wells, bear evidence for the successful installation. The system is anticipated to reach its remediation goals by 2008. The municipality continues to utilze the facility for storage and training during operation of the remediation system.
