The combination of increasing demand for potable water and decreasing supplies is causing water planners to look at deeper, more saline aquifers for additional supply. Common challenges with new source development include lack of aquifer hydraulic and water quality data, increased costs combined with lower well yields, greater collapse stresses during construction, and a generally more corrosive environment. This presentation will focus on design considerations relevant to deeper, non-potable production zones. Alternate solutions will be discussed to include attention to specific drilling aspects, hole and casing size selection, and material and strength considerations.
