The Republic of Botswana has been proactive in the development and sustainability of its water resources despite social, economic, and environmental challenges. A grant, partially funded by USTDA, the Botswana Department of Water Affairs, and Roscoe Moss Inc., was awarded in 2007 to establish a borehole rehabilitation and monitoring program. Our laboratory was selected to analyze the water samples and make recommendations for treatment based on results of the analyses, well type, and regional location. Through chemical and biological water analyses, we were able to pinpoint problems within individual well systems and make recommendations to refine and target remediation. Laboratory and site data will be used to discuss universally applicable test methods and regional characteristics of the water from each of three unique ecosystems — the Okavango Delta wetlands in the north, the Kalahari Desert in the south, and the savannah woodlands in the eastern part of the country.
