Many of the world’s largest springs are located in karst regions of the Euro-Asian Alpine orogeny belt, including The Balkans, Turkey, Iraq and Iran. Most of them have been used for water supply and irrigation, sometimes for millennia. Their hydrogeologic and hydrologic characteristics, as well as engineering aspects of utilization and protection, are explained with an emphasis on sustainable use.
