Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Organic Chemicals in Ground Water: Prevention, Detection, and Remediation® Conference

MTBE, TBA, and Ethanol Remediation Seminar
This seminar reviews physical, chemical, and biodegradation characteristics of fuel oxygenate alcohols such as tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) and ethanol, and ethers such as methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE). These fuel oxygenates associated with gasoline spills potentially pose risks to human health and the environment. MTBE was a widely used additive in gasoline in the U.S. from the late 1970s until several years ago. MTBE impacts are expected to exist for decades. TBA is often found in association with MTBE, and was also used as an oxygenate in its own right on a limited basis. With the recent increased use of ethanol in place of MTBE in the U.S., impacts of this oxygenate are of heightened interest.
