Columbia River Gorge Field Trip
The route through the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area offers a mix of spectacular scenic views and unparalleled access to explore the geology of the region’s most important ground water flow systems that are hosted by Miocene-age flood basalts of the Columbia River Basalt Group. Along the way we will see classic outcrops that provide clues that have helped us unravel the complex story of the dynamic geologic interplay between the emplacement of the Columbia River flood basalts and the evolution of the ancestral Columbia River, Cascade Volcanic Arc, and Yakima Fold Belt. Stops are planned for the Mosier area (Oregon), at the east end of the gorge, to illustrate and discuss the nature and complexity of the Columbia River basalt aquifers. Refreshments and lunch will be provided with our lunch stop taking place at the historic Marine Park in Cascade Locks on the Columbia River.
