State Regulatory Agencies: Drilling Guideline Revisions and the Challenges of New Technologies

Thursday, December 10, 2009: 8:00 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
209 (Morial Convention Center)
Learn how, while recent technological advances in site characterization and in situ remediation have made environmental projects more efficient, they have also created new challenges such as how best to protect subsurface formations from cross-contamination and ensure well operation productivity. For example, soil and groundwater sampling are routinely accomplished using direct-push technology (DPT), often with on-site analytical screening methods such as the membrane interface probe. Delivery and recovery of fluids or gasses for subsurface remediation increasingly depends on wells installed using DPT. While increasing efficiency, because technologies such as this are still new and evolving, consensus solutions have yet to develop to address the challenges. Open and intensive dialog among the parties involved are necessary to ensure the safe and environmentally sound applications of new subsurface sampling, delivery, and recovery technologies.
