Brackish and Saline Groundwater Resources: Characterization and Development

Wednesday, May 4, 2011: 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Columbia (Hyatt Regency Baltimore on the Inner Harbor)
As freshwater aquifers across the nation are experiencing depletion, water planners in many water-short areas are looking for alternative sources. Brackish and saline groundwater is an underdeveloped resource in many parts of the nation. With the costs of desalination decreasing, especially for slightly saline water resources, the hydrologic characterization of these aquifers is lacking. To plan for future developmental costs and sustainability, mapping and delineation of saline reservoirs are needed. This session will highlight recent and ongoing work to inventory and assess saline groundwater resources at the state and regional level. Topics include assessment of reservoir characteristics, quantity, quality, and yield.
