Contaminants sorbed or diffused into lower permeability matrices within or bounding an aquifer can be a considerable reservoir for contaminant mass. Characterizing the nature and extent and subsequent remediation of sorbed or diffused contaminants can present significant challenges. The success of the remediation often will depend on the ability of a technology to reverse the contaminant concentration gradient. This session presents effective investigation techniques that have successfully quantified contaminant concentrations within a matrix, and innovative approaches for remediation of sorbed or diffused contaminant mass.
