Water and Energy: How Beneficial Use Can Be Sustainable and a Priority

Water is an inextricable part of mining and oil and gas development.  Beneficial use of mine water (contaminated or otherwise) or produced water refers to the use of said water for a secondary purpose that has a positive value.  The determination of a specific beneficial use depends on economics, federal and state jurisdiction, and the circumstances of each case.   Once an economically feasible offtake is identified, related water right issues often must be determined.  This presentation will look at the current status of benefical use in various western states, the increasing value of water and how a sustainable approach can become a win-win outcome for both industry, municipalities, and communities.
