In Situ Chemical Oxidation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons Utilizing Ozone

Ozone has been shown to be an effective oxidant in the treatment of petroleum hydrocarbons including those associated with gasoline.   Since ozone is generated on site and is delivered to the subsurface as a gas, it is particularly effective in treating contamination in complex geologies such as weathered shale and competent bedrock that is found throughout the northeastern United States.  However, because of health and safety issues, the use of ozone to remediate impacted soil and groundwater at active petroleum distribution centers and retail stations has been limited.

This presentation will describe the successful use of ozone to remediated gasoline impacted soil (weathered shale and bedrock) and groundwater at an active retail petroleum station in New York State.  Ozone was successfully delivered to the subsurface with no health and safety issues.  The injection of ozone was controlled remotely utilizing a web based proprietary operating system. Greater than 95% decrease in petroleum related volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes) was realized following treatment.

His experience includes managing corporate accounts exceeding $2M annually, managing remediation projects up to $12M annually, and design projects exceeding $500,000 per project. Mr. Shoyer has technical expertise in environmental investigations and remediation technologies, engineering design, construction management, UST compliance and land development.
