Lessons Learned from a Decade of Groundwater Availability Modeling in Texas
Lessons Learned from a Decade of Groundwater Availability Modeling in Texas
Presented on Monday, April 29, 2013
More than 25 computer models have been made in the past decade of major and minor aquifers in Texas as part of the statewide Groundwater Availability Modeling program. Reports with standard formats document model construction and calibration and address models’ limitations and potential improvements. Models’ authors will participate in this technical session to critically discuss the main technical challenges in model development and the improved understanding of the studied aquifers that grew from the modeling process.

University of Texas at San Antonio, San Antonio, TX
Dr. Alan Dutton has > 30 years of experience in hydrogeology with emphasis on numerical modeling of groundwater resources; basin- and watershed-scale flow; geochemical controls on freshwater-to-brine water quality; and the application of stable and radioactive isotopes in hydrogeology and paleohydrology. He developed and worked on computer models of groundwater resources in the Edwards, Carrizo-Wilcox, Ogallala, Trinity-Woodbine, and Gulf Coast aquifers and other aquifers in Texas. Dr. Dutton has been at The University of Texas at San Antonio since 2004 where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in geology, engineering geology, geochemistry, physical and environmental hydrogeology, and groundwater modeling.

Robert E. Mace joined the Texas Water Development Board in 1999 to manage the Groundwater Availability Modeling Program. Over the next nine years, he rose from a unit leader to director for the Groundwater Resources Division to assuming his present role in 2009 as a Deputy Executive Administrator to lead the Water Science & Conservation program area for the agency. Prior to Texas Water Development Board, Dr. Mace worked eight years at the Bureau of Economic Geology at The University of Texas at Austin as a hydrologist and research scientist.
