Hidrogeología Moderna, Retos y Aplicaciones (Modern Hydrogeology –Challenges & Applications)

Cualquier programa de desarrollo sostenible en una región requiere aplicar el entendimiento de la teoría de los sistemas de flujo del agua subterránea (Tóth, 1962…. Tóth, 2009), la cual componente dominante para alcanzar la comprensión necesaria del ambiente. Esto es un requisito previo para entender: i) el agua subterránea asequible, y ii) la dependencia entre el agua subterránea y otros componentes del ambiente. El entendimiento del flujo del agua subterránea es necesario en estudios ambientales que involucran ingeniería civil, ecología, agricultura, planeación territorial, entre otros. Comprensión a ser utilizada para identificar preguntas específicas referentes al ambiente y obtener soluciones ambientalmente viables. El abordar una pregunta correcta sobre agua subterránea requiere la comprensión apropiada del sistema de flujo subterráneo que gobierna, ya que a menudo el agua subterránea es parte de la solución. Un sistema hidrogeológico necesita ser entendido como estructura dinámica, donde los componentes del flujo (áreas de recarga, tránsito y descarga) se definan en 3D, y la posición relativa de sus flujos (local, intermedio y regional) se reconozcan en el ambiente hidrogeológico particular. La comprensión entre agua subterránea y los otros componentes del ambiente, es una componente fundamental de la hidrogeología moderna que liga a la población y su ambiente permitiéndole proponer una gestión sostenible del agua. English version: (Any sustainable development program in any region (whether the US or Mexico) requires understanding of the groundwater flow system theory as a key component to achieve the required comprehension of the environment. This is a pre-requisite to understand: i) groundwater availability and ii) the dependence between groundwater and other components of the environment. Understanding groundwater flow is a must in environmental studies involving civil engineering, ecology, agriculture, and land planning, among others. Such understanding may be used to solve specific challanges concerning an environment that has been influenced anthropogenically. Tackling the problem requires a proper understanding of the governing groundwater flow system and often groundwater is the solution. A hydrogeological system needs to be understood as a dynamic structure, where the components of flow (recharge, transit and discharge areas) are defined in 3D, and their relative positions (local, intermediate and regional flows) are recognized in a particular hydrogeological environment (i.e. fractured, granular or double porosity). Understanding the relationship between groundwater and other environmental components is paramount in modern hydrogeology which also links population and environment to enable them to propose a sustainable water management strategy.)

Joel is a Hydrogeologist with +30 years experience, graduated at the Mexican National Polytechnic Mexico (Geologist Engineer), has an MSc and PhD (Hydrogeology) from London University, UK. His professional experience includes Argentina, Australia, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and Morocco. Joel has authored and co-authored, internationally, articles, books and chapters in books; is lecturer and researcher in the Earth Sciences and Geography postgraduate programmes (*UNAM, Mexico). Joel has been external expert for the IAEA, the European Commission, and Advisor of the LVII Mexican Congress; he carries out courses and seminars on groundwater flow systems in Latin-American countries.
