Working with News Media

Presented on Tuesday, December 15, 2015

As a groundwater expert, you may find yourself on the other end of a microphone, camera, or reporter’s notebook—sometimes in response to events, such as drought, and other times at your initiation to get the word out regarding some issue. How do you communicate effectively in an interview when you cannot go back and edit what you say? How can you overcome your fear of talking to a reporter and saying something that has unintended, negative consequences? NGWA Public Awareness Director Cliff Treyens, a 38-year communications professional and former newspaper reporter, will discuss key principles to getting your message across without creating collateral damage. Treyens will use scenarios and role playing to demonstrate the dos and don’ts of responding to interview questions in a way that capably says what youwant to say.
