Understanding Well Problems: Coliform, Iron Bacteria, and Odors in Wells

Thursday, December 10, 2009: 4:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
207 (Morial Convention Center)
Combat these well problems by gaining a basic understanding of them in this workshop. Learn how coliform counts relate to solving chlorination problems. Find out the importance of identifying opportunistic pathogens and slime formers often misidentified as iron bacteria, and how both relate to problems with chlorination. Discover how “timed” testing in wells and comparison of coliform counts, heterotrophic plate counts, and identifying bacteria can help determine if the problem is contained in the well—or coming from an outside source meaning disinfection is not going to solve the problem. Learn how well odors such as “rotten egg,” musty, oily, and swampy may relate to other problems.
