Ground Water Resources and Competition: Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee
A series of presentations will describe the hydrogeology and ground water resources of the Mississippi Embayment with a focus on the three-state area (Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee) around Memphis, Tennessee. Ground water is the sole source for Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. About 200 million gallons per day are withdrawn from Tertiary aquifers for municipal and industrial use in the Memphis area. Urban growth and agricultural development in the region has the potential to result in the increased demand and competition for ground water resources across state lines. Current investigations are being conducted on the ground water resources of the area by USGS offices in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi, and by the University of Memphis with Arkansas State University and the University of Mississippi. This session will focus on the ground water resources of the Memphis area in Tennessee, along with Arkansas, and Mississippi.
