Dealing with Stormwater: Implications of Recharge or Disposal to Shallow Aquifers

Monday, May 2, 2011: 10:45 a.m.-12:05 p.m.
Constellation E (Hyatt Regency Baltimore on the Inner Harbor)
There is an increased emphasis on controlling stormwater runoff (both volume and quality) from existing urban/suburban areas and in areas of new construction to protect surface water quality and to prevent combined sewer overflows. Infiltration/disposal/recharge to shallow groundwater is one of the best management practices (BMPs) being encouraged at both a national and local level. This move to keep water local through the use of BMPs—for example, green infrastructure, injection wells, infiltration galleries, etc.—could have both positive and negative repercussions on shallow aquifers. This session addresses potential impacts on groundwater resources, interconnectedness of surface water and groundwater, and evaluation of BMP effectiveness for the removal of contaminants prior to infiltration.
