Drilling in Developing Nations: Contractor and Equipment Challenges

Tuesday, December 5, 2017: 1:45 p.m.-2:45 p.m.
202 AB (Music City Center)
Constructing potable water wells in a developing nation includes many challenges and some rewarding surprises. The scope of a large well construction project can be difficult to propose or explain in the most favorable environment, but is can be nearly impossible when the perception of said project can differ dramatically. Most personnel are poorly trained and proper, well-maintained equipment is scarce. How can a water supply be developed in these circumstances? The biggest surprise to visiting teams is the ingenious techniques the locals have developed to compensate for the lack of proper education, materials, and equipment.  This workshop will frame the challenges as well as the learning experiences the working visitors take home.
