A New Type of Hybrid Groundwater Energy System

Open-loop geothermal heat pump systems directly use the heat energy in groundwater as a source of energy in heating mode and as a sink receiving energy in cooling mode.  This small commercial building case-history example presents a new type of hybrid groundwater energy system that couples a photovoltaic solar electrical-energy system to an open-loop geothermal heat pump heat-energy system.  The geothermal heat pumps multiply the power generated by the photovoltaic solar system by 5 times in heating mode and by 10 times in cooling mode.  This session will show how this new type of hybrid will work with both open- and closed-loop geothermal heat pump systems, and will explain several ways to optimize the hybrid system’s performance.  The complete design, construct, and operating sequence will be presented together with the installed cost of the two hybrid system components, the energy production data, and the energy savings data.
